WT♡ is the Red List?

What the What:

Kids these days. Always talking about this Red List thing. So what is this famous Red List? It is a list assembled by the International Living Future Institute of chemicals that are the worst of the worst at polluting the environment, or accumulating in the environment at toxic levels, or affecting the health of those who create or work with the material.

There are three levels of certification:

  • Declared: a manufacturer has declared 100% of ingredients in their product, but the product contains Red List ingredients or chemicals of concern.

  • LBC Compliant: a manufacturer has declared 99% of ingredients and the product contains one or more Red List ingredients that LBC recognizes cannot be removed from a product at this time. For LBC projects, this counts as Red List Free.

  • Red List Free: a manufacturer has declared 100% of ingredients and the product contains no Red List chemicals.

Who’s Who:

The Red List is researched and curated by the International Living Future Institute, located in Seattle, WA.

Manufacturers submit their information to ILFI and the labels are issued by ILFI.

Designers use the Red List to evaluate the health and safety of the materials they specify on projects.

How do I do it:

As a manufacturer, you can eliminate Red List chemicals from your products and make that information public and available! We’ll love you more for it!

As a designer, you can use Declare labels to determine if a product has any Red List ingredients and prioritize using ones that do not.  You can also ask manufacturers to eliminate Red List ingredients and change this industry!

You can get right to it and search for products that are Red List Free on our site here!

Designers can also use Declare labels to get LEED points and the Living Building Challenge Materials Petal.

Say it with a Meme:

More and more designers are prioritizing using products that are Red List Free. They’re good for the environment and good for people! Put Red List chemicals on your “oh no-no” list and break up with them!
