Everywhere you look today you see fierce women creating space and demanding to be noticed. Inspired by their grace and strength, Miller Paint has named Lioness 0864 their 2020 Color of the Year.

Lioness is a powerful hue of yellow that exudes a confident and free-spirited energy. This year’s trend pick isn’t just a fad; it is derived from the oldest pigment used to create color. Ochre has been in use to create yellow hues for at least 285k years!

This color is incredibly versatile. With its ancient origins and natural dye options (i.e. turmeric), it could read organic when paired with natural materials and earthy supporting colors. In other cases, paired with more industrial or manufactured materials, it is capable of holding up a bold visual system.

We love that this pick reclaims a historically masculine color and fills it with a feminine energy characteristic of the cultural moment.

The typical associations with femininity are gentleness, passivity, sweetness. By using a bold hue like yellow and attaching a feminine name, it suggests that strength, confidence, and power are also feminine characteristics. Color can be powerful.

In the spirit of community, Lioness doesn’t have to stand alone. Miller Paint chose a supporting palette for Lioness that gives us some serious #squadgoals. These pairing options consist mostly of smokey pastels like sage green, soft terracottas, and hazy neutrals. 2020 is all about contrast, and these combinations do a beautiful job of combining brights and pastels in unexpected ways.

Wondering how Lioness came to be named color of the year? Miller Paint is part of an international organization called Color Guild, which is comprised of independent paint companies from around the world. They meet once a year to discuss color trends in the design world, and their global discussion resulted in the consensus that Lioness would rule this year’s color inspo.

Like any good warrior, Lioness is luminous and daring. Though there’s a time and place for strong color statements, you’re much more likely to be charged with making a more subtle impact. Consider using Lioness in smaller doses to enhance the colors it surrounds. Other options include unexpected accent walls or trim and door accents.

Thanks to Miller Paint for sponsoring this post!
